I had a pleasant surprise at the weekend. My daughter and ex had been clearing out the loft and found an envelope
full of old 35mm negatives from the 80s and 90s. Some had had it but I managed to salvage a few.
Don't expect to much of these photos as time has taken its toll on them. Some old favorites in among them. Lamiel in black?. Mallard, Scotsman, City of Wells, Kolhapur, Clun castle, Defiant to name a few.

If anyone has any recollections of approx dates for any of these photos let me know. The ones of Lamiel painted black or was it very dark green? It certainly looks black! Something in the back of my mind tells me that it was black! But a lot of water has gone under the bridge since those days and the old brain aint what it used to be!

Sir Lamiel was painted in SR lined olive green at the time of your pictures. I also have slides of a similar date and never saw 777 in any other livery than olive green. One of your pictures is a close-up of the nameplate and you can definitely see the lined olive green in the lower left hand corner. It may well be that the film you used was not good at rendering the difference between a dark green loco and black one.

AFAIK 777 has only ever been SR olive green or BR lined green in preservation. I agree with you that it's most likely the film that has rendered the loco a bit on the dark side colour wise.

A couple of dates for the pics, 46229 on The South Yorshireman was 04/05/1985, the beginning of her epic visit to Marylebone, the other pic of Hamilton would have been either may or June 1985 when she ran some of the Sunday lunch Stratfords, which anyone who witnessed will never forget.
I have shots of 71000 at Didcot on 16/07/1988 and hauling The Red Dragon (Did-Derby-Did) on 07/04/1990 so a search of Seven Bells should produce the date for the Mid-Day Scot run.
5305 ran, Marylebone-Derby with 34092 doing the return on 21/05/1988 I am sure they ran the same train in reverse around this date so again a search of Seven Bells should provide the date for the shots of 5305/34092 with the Maroon rake and green support coach.
5305 ran a sunday stratford lunch including Ethel on 17/04/1988 so your shots of 5305 and Ethel will be around that time.
The shot of 4771 is likely to be around 08/1987 as she was working the Sundau lunches at that time.
4468 did a Sunday lunch on 12/10/1986 (4498 ran a duplicate train on the same day, so possible the shots were taken the same day) the shots of Mallard will be a round this time as she stayed at Marylebone for only a short period.
And as stated 777 was in Olive green at that time.
Hope these notes make sense, thanks for sharing they bring back some happy memories.

Thanks for all of that Chris. I wish I had kept a record. As stated those negatives were stored up in a dusty loft. Most have had it I'm sad to say. I dare say the Lamiel ones have suffered too much and have lost their true colours and thats why it looks black. It was not my intention to try and fool or upset anyone. Its just thats the way they came off the scanner and thats why I was asking the question! I can't remember last week let alone the 80 or 90s those days were just a blur if you get my drift!!

    Six Bells - Obstruction Danger.
Seven Bells - Stop and examine.

Both codes to wake any signalman!

    Cheers, Neil

5305 on The Risborough Venturer was 23/04/1988. The shots of Kolhapur at Stratford are quite possibly when she shared a serious of shuttles to Tysley with Clun Castle, will dig out the date.
The shot of 34092 on Hatton bank with maroon mk1's i'm pretty sure is 18/06/1988, and with the Raspberry Ripple set at Harbury 12/06/1988
