    Hello all,

I am trying to build a vague list of all the foreign locomotives in the UK, such as the Swedish and Norwegian locomotives. Can anyone help? Feel free to throw in known locomotives and their locations!

    Many thanks

    Chris

OK, for starters there are four ex-Southern Railway USA tanks - two at the KESR, one at the Bluebell and one at ?? There are also some ex-Yugoslav versions of the same that have no genuine UK mainline history, but would fit your criteria of foreign locos over here.

The fourth USA tank (30072) is at the Keithley and Worth Valley Railway, who also have a S160 2-8-0 (ex Poland) and a WD 2-10-0 that worked in Poland? but was built in the UK. KESR has a Norwegian mogul.

Good question, I suppose locomotives that were built and operated overseas, but have been preserved in the UK. It's more for interest then any other reason.

I knew the K&ESR had the Norwegian mogul, wasn't sure if it was still there? Didn't the Nene Valley have one too?

I think that the Worth Valley's WD is a 2-8-0. It was British built, but I think worked in Sweden and possibly the Netherlands, rather than Poland. There are some repatriated British built WD 2-10-0s which worked in Greece - one on the North Norfolk, numbered 90775 (which was the next number in the series) and one on the NYMR, 3672 "Dame Vera Lynn".

The Severn Valley's 8f, No. 48773 worked abroad before repatriation. somewhere in the Middle East, where it sustained a dent as a result of a collision with a camel, which is still visible. The Glos-Warwicks have an ex- Turkish 8F, which was LMS 8274 and then TCDD 45160. Another two British-built ex-Turkish State Railways 8Fs were repatriated a year or two back, but one was subsequently re-exported to Israel.

If this thread is to include British-built engines which worked abroad on loan, there are also North British J36 65243 Maude, SECR "P" classes 27, 323 and 753 and GWR mogul 5322, all of which were sent overseas in World War I. I think some Dean Goods 0-6-0s were also sent abroad, but whether preserved 2516 was one of them I have no idea.

Apart from the USA tanks and possibly one or two of the S160s, I can't think of any foreign-built locos which ran in the UK and which have survived into preservation. Most engines not built at the companies' own works were usually built by a UK manufacturer. One of few exceptions were some of the SECR L Class, which were built by Borsig of Berlin, just prior to the start of World War 1. Regrettably, none of this class have survived..

I had it in my head that they were going to sell 3672, not sure why.

On that point, isn't 2253 (the S160) for sale? Poor condition though, if I'm correct?

Actually, what happened to 6046, I thought that was at the NYMR too?

Standard gauge (I have a list)only or narrow gauge too? If both you need to invest in the IRS book.

Standard for now, I imagine the narrow gauge list would be quite substantial!

There is a second Norwegian Mogul at Bressingham. The Middleton Railway has a Danish 0-4-0. The Downpatrick & County Down Railway has an Orenstein & Koppel 0-4-0. There are or were substantial lumps of S160 2-8-0s at Preston and Ruddington. The Sentinel Railcar at Quainton Road, also a very nice ex-SAR Class 25NC (Cape standard gauge!), talking of which there are further ex-SAR locos at Summerlee, Glasgow, Manchester MOSI, York. MOSI also has an ex-Pakistan Railways Beyer 4-4-0.

If Bressingham is mentioned you can't miss out the massive Peer Gynt plus a finnish (ok different gauge) 2-8-0 at the front. Plus Yvonne at Holycombe was built in Belgium. Then you have Polish 'Spartan' at Spa Valley.

Epping Ongar Railway still has a couple of Finnish 5' gauge locos which have been reported at risk of scrapping unless someone buys them and takes them away.

The KESR Norwegian 2-6-0 is NSB no.376, recently back in service after overhaul. Bressingham have no.377 of the same type. They arrived in the UK at around the same time but I don't believe they've ever been seen together in this country.
