Central America’s first metro line in Panama is nearing completion, according to project leads FCC.

The Spanish infrastructure company has revealed that Panama Metro Line 1 is now over 90 per cent complete, with dynamic testing already underway along the 14 kilometre route.

A consortium comprising FCC, Brazilian construction company Odebrecht and Alstom was awarded a $1.8 billion to build the new metro system in 2010.

The first three of 19 new trains arrived in May. As well as supplying the rolling stock, Alstom has also been responsible for installing its CBTC train control system on the line.

The President of Panama Ricardo Martinelli and the executive secretary of the metro, Roberto Roy, were onboard one of the new trains earlier this month during a trial run between Albrook and Cinco de Mayo station.

Eleven new stations have been built along the line, when features a combination of underground and above-ground sections.
