Thanks to a very generous donation The Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway has been gifted an original London and North Western Railway (LNWR) four-wheeled carriage body dating from around 1900. These carriages were frequently used on our line, and throughout the South Wales area, with around a hundred built for the Abergavenny district alone. Indeed, the photograph shows a rake of these coaches at Abersychan and Talywain on a service from Brynmawr via Blaenavon.

    However, we need your help!

Although we have been gifted the body free of charge, we need to raise funds to transport the body to Blaenavon from its location in Milton Keynes and undertake initial conservation of the carriage body. Being a charity and entirely volunteer run, we rely heavily on donations to help cover these costs.

This is a unique opportunity for you to help the railway to recreate a piece of local history. Only a very small number of these still exist, with this example surviving by pure chance in a domestic garden. We have the expertise to help restore the carriage to its original condition, and with the railway’s aim to extend to Abersychan, we will, one day, be able to recreate the photograph and give future generations an opportunity to experience a key part of South Wales’ railway history.

Any donation, no matter how small will be most gratefully received. Any surplus monies from this appeal will be reserved for the restoration of the coach, which in itself will require the acquisition of many parts and materials. In time, as restoration commences, we will also need more volunteers to help physically renovate the carriage so please do come and get involved.

---See linked page for details on how to donate---

I've already sent my donation. This is a really worthy project and I'd urge others to get behind it :)

    Hello,
I find it difficult to understand the quote from the original message:
    "We have the expertise....."
I have yet to witness this.
I can not at present support this project.

That's not an unreasonable point, but experience is gained by tackling projects such s these, and there is a dearth of preserved early LNWR coaches, so even if they only succeed in conserving the body it is a worthy project.

Certainly a worthwhile project - early carriages need all the help that they can get.

    ... says someone working on a 7compartment composite from 1901 ...

    and might I mention NSR61 and NSR127 ?
