    Morning All,

In 1965 I made a tour of Austria and the first batch of pictures in now on Flickr. If anyone would like to have a look, this is the first one in the Photostream :

Although not strictly preservation, some of the locos shown did survive and are now either in museums or running on preserved railways.

Hope that they are of interest. Further pictures will be added in due course.

    Ron,

    Nostalgic photos; thank you.

May I suggest a few corrections, which I’m surprised that Niek didn’t spot:

R2294 & 2295 are actually Gmünd – see my photo 1. The station at Česke V. is the old “Gmünd” station, prior to the shake-up of that part of the world, and is a very large structure. On my last visit, a couple of years ago, the huge roundhouse was still in situ, but 556 0506 had gone! (Fortunately now preserved) Additionally, the signals were of the old ‘split’ CZ type – your photos have the ‘new’ German type, with which Bf Gmünd was signalled. The current Bf Gmünd is quite new (I do not have the history to hand, as I write, but it’s very interesting, with the construction of a new chord to the ng line to Alt Nagelberg). I suggest these two photos were taken from the level-crossing in the foreground of my photo1.

Photos 2 & 3 are looking into CZ, and the small white board denotes the actual border (For photo 3 I was a little more daring.)

R2296 is leaving Gmünd, and heading into CZ (the locos were, as far as I’m aware, always smokebox first into Austria. I have stood on the top of the cutting in the background many times!

R2302 is crossing the ng line to Weitra and Groß Gerungs.

The ng station layout at Gmünd (R2293) has now been swept-away completely, and there was a huge building being erected on site last summer. Much of the Zfst (shed) infrastructure has also gone, and I think the turntable may not have survived.

I, too, have been unable to locate R2304a, but am sure that it is not between Gmünd & Litschau. It must be between Heidenreichstein & Alt Nagelberg. There are a couple of signs in the background which may give a clue if they can be enlarged.

    Regards

    Dick

Hello Dick. Long time no hear!

Thanks for the corrections; as you say, it's surprising the neither Niek or anybody else spotted my not so deliberate mistakes, especially as I put a link on Dreischeibe and lots of Germans have seen the pictures.

I only went to Gmünd on that one occasion and that was all but 50 years ago. None of my slides are written on, so I had to rely on memory which has clearly failed me!

No one has come up with any suggestions as to where the picture of 2095.12 was taken, but I'm still hoping that someone will recognize it.

    Ron.

Further to my earlier message, I posed the question of 2095.12's location on Drehscheibe and it has been identified as departing from Heidenreichstein.

The station building can be seen behind the tree with the goods shed beyond it. The lady is waiting at the level crossing.

For anyone who hasn't seen the picture in question, and would like to, this is the link :
