Planning approval for Rochester station

Medway Council has given Network Rail the go ahead to build a new £26 million station in Rochester.

The station, which will be operated by Southeastern when it opens in 2015, will form part of a £135 million programme of works already underway in Kent.

As well as upgrading the signalling system across 62 miles of railway, the east Kent resignalling project will also see platforms extended at Strood station, a new platform built at Rainham station and upgraded level crossings.

The new Rochester station will include three platforms, each capable of accommodating 12-car trains.


Fiona Taylor, Network Rail’s route managing director for Kent, said: “This new station will deliver a huge boost to Rochester and Medway and provide passengers with improved facilities and better access to the town centre and surrounding area.

“It will accommodate longer trains than the current station, helping boost capacity and providing more seats for passengers. It will also help kick-start the wider regeneration of the Riverside area, which is an important part of the development and future of Rochester.”
