Platform 12 at Crewe is being partially rebuilt at its south end. The work is progressing fairly rapidly and will probably be done next week.

These views give an idea of how the platform face is built up.

Here, the face has been cut back ready for rebuilding:

What was the reason for this rebuild? I don't remember any problems with it..

Not sure about Platform 12, but the roof over Platforms 5 & 6 (and the through lines between) was deemed to be in a dangerous condition, in so much as the glass could become dislodged by the air blast from a train passing through at speed, hence the speed restriction on the through lines.

But now that the work on the roof over those platforms has been completed surely the restriction will be lifted?

There is no speed restriction on the UF and DF other than the 80 that has been on since the 1980s reworking of the layout. I'm not aware that any more restrictive TSR has been imposed, even during the canopy refurbishment exercise.

However, some roof panels did come loose during spells of high wind not long ago. These were near the ends of P3 and P4, and those platforms were temporarily closed while the panels were secured &/or removed.

Partial rebuild of part of P12 could be precautionary.

When the "end" of the former P1 and P1b was being cut back and squared off, a small digger was used to take away spoil. One afternoon, it was turned around close to the edge of the former P1b, and the action of the tracks loosened the platform face. There was a sudden cracking sound and the whole lot caved in. Fortunately for the digger driver, his mount stayed on the platform. Could have been what HRH would have called a brine trizer situation.

Would have been built at the same time as the present P12, so I assume the checking regime has been stepped up and has found something.
