The police response around the death of a man hit by a train in Kent is to be investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The body of the man, believed to be in his 40s, was found near a railway line in West Malling on 27 April. The dead man has yet to be formally identified.

The IPCC said he may have been the estranged partner of a woman who told Kent Police the day before that she was worried he might try to hurt himself. The inquiry will look at any possible "delay" in the response to her calls. The IPCC said a "brief search" around West Malling railway station on the evening of 26 April failed to locate the man.

Commissioner Nicola Williams said: "Our investigation will seek to establish why there was a delay in the time it took Kent Police to respond to the calls made to their control room, and consider any recommendations and lessons that may need to be learned following our investigation."
