    In 1946 Frederick Hawksworth, Collett’s successor, introduced a higher degree of superheat to the Castle boiler with resulting increased economy in water consumption. From 1956 the fitting of double chimneys to selected engines, combined with larger superheaters, further enhanced their capacity for sustained high-speed performance. The fastest recorded was hauled by 7018 Drysllwyn Castle in April 1958 taking 93 minutes 50 seconds with a top speed of 102 mph (164 km/h) at Little Somerford

    My first post here for a while, & I have to say that that last collection of pictures bring back some happy (& not so happy) memories of being on Reading Station watching the final castle turns on the Worcester/Hereford services during 1963/64.
    Had many a ride behind them as well. The unhappy ones are showing the locos in storage or after withdrawal. Like 7027 at Reading shed, had a short footplate ride on it in Oct 1963. Glad it is still with us.
    7036 at Yatton is when steam returned to two Padd-WSM diagrams during summer Saturdays 1963. The 09:45 & 10:45 departures from Paddington.
