A new private train tour will set off from Budapest destined for Tehran in October – the first private European train service ever allowed into Iran.

The 15-day journey, which travels through Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey before arriving in Iran, has been launched by the MIR Corporation.

Named ‘Jewels of Persia’, the tour takes in several UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the ancient city of Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria, the Fairy Chimneys of Göreme Valley in Turkey and the ruins of Persepolis in Iran.

MIR vice president Annie Lucas said: “These departures are the first ever for this program.

“Intrepid travellers can be a part of history travelling aboard the inaugural trips on a truly unique route you won’t see on any standard itinerary.”
