Around this time last year I bought a Canon EOS 40D with the 17-85 lens on the strength of seeing some of the excellent results produced from this combo by members of this forum.

For 10 months I was very happy with all aspects of this kit - untll let me down badly. On the 4th day of a photting trip to the Czech Republic I took my camera out of its bag only to find the lens was jammed at 17mm and would not budge!! Canon repaired it under warranty but I now discover this is a common problem with the 17 - 85; indeed one repairer has an ebay item to correct the fault at a fixed price! The probem (it seems) is one single screw deep in the workings that comes loose.

Has anyone else had a similar problem with this lens and more to the point did it happen again after repair?
