The Government of Quebec has announced plans to start preliminary work on an extension of Montreal Metro’s Blue line.

AMT has been awarded a contract worth $38.8 million to carry out initial feasibility studies into the extension which will take the line east into Saint-Michel and Anjou.

In political terms, the news indicates that ministers are moving forward with a project that featured heavily in the current government’s campaign.

Announcing this latest commitment, ministers said that once work was completed on the Blue line, it would begin an extension of the city’s Yellow line.

Speaking about the extension, Minister Gaudreault said: “It will have major leverage for the economic development of the metropolis. It will also respond to the challenges posed by population growth and sustainable mobility in the sector.”

Montreal officials have estimated that the project as a whole could lead to the construction of around 12,000 new homes and create in the region of 9,000 jobs.
