Talyllyn Railway Receives Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

    Posted on June 2, 2013
On a weekend when the Talyllyn Railway has been re-enacting its Coronation Day trains of sixty years ago, it is appropriate that it has just been announced from Buckingham Palace that the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society has been honoured with the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
This award recognises the work that volunteers of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society have contributed to preserving and operation the railway since 1951. This is the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK for outstanding work and has been likened to an MBE for volunteer organisations.
The criterion for the ward states that it is ‘given for outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers who regularly devote their time to helping others in the community, improving the quality of life and opportunity for others and providing an outstanding service.’ To qualify groups have to be nominated and then assessed by regional committees. They are then considered by a national committee for final selection and recommendation to The Queen. Previous winners have included Age UK, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, St John’s Ambulance, Victim Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, and the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
At the railway the news has brought great excitement, Marketing Officer, Phil Eaton, said: ‘We would like to express our gratitude to all those who put forward and supported our nomination, including our MP, Elfyn Llwyd and our local councillor Anne Lloyd-Jones, who have both been very active in supporting us’.
Lis Mann chairman of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society said: “I was excited to discover that we had been shortlisted for the Queen’s Volunteer Service Award, and even more so when I heard we had been selected to receive it. This is a real reward for all the volunteers who have given their time to help maintain and operate this railway since we became the world’s first preserved railway in 1951. It is humbling that we have been recognised in such a way.”
Dave Scotson, Chief Executive of the Talyllyn Railway Company added: “We are delighted and proud to discover that the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society has been has been selected as one of the recipients of the Queens Award for Voluntary Service for 2013. It is a real honour for the Society”.
We will be presented with a certificate signed by the Queen and a domed glass crystal.
