Why do the FR/WHR not leave the coaching stock they leave at Port each night in the platform roads? Is there some operating or planning restriction from when the platform was extended. I would understand if the carriages were being moved under cover but looking at the web cam it seems that both on the FR and the WHR the carriages on the last train back get shunted to one of the other roads last thing in the day before being shunted back into place the following morning? Surely it would just be easier if they were left where they were?

The only other thought I had was if it was not some local obligation that the FR have to comply with to keep neighbours happy was that it was because of plug in points etc for cleaning but since Port has just been extensively remodelled I discounted that as I would have presumed that when they rebuilt they would have provided for such things. My memory is going these days but I seem to recall that they used to leave carriages in the platform road overnight before Port was rebuilt but I might be wrong as it would seem odd to change policy

My guess - out of sight, out of mind (for vandals)...

Coaching stock is allowed to be left in the FR platform road and frequently is as before, however stock is not left in the WHR platform road for operational reasons as this is part of the through running line. It is also considered to be more prone to vandalism being further away from the station buildings, security cameras and so on. All the facilities required to service a set are kept in the ugly beehive things on the platform. Glan-y-mor carriage shed only accommodates sets 7 coaches long so spares are shunted on an off as required. Sets are also rotated for inspection and things like that. So it isn't always the case that the last set back will be the first one out the next day. So if the first set is coming over from Boston Lodge the platform has to be kept clear.
