THE man who was originally responsible for preserving the world famous “Flying Scotsman” steam locomotive is among people from the rail industry included in The Queen’s New Year Honours.

Alan Pegler, then a Doncaster businessman, bought “Flying Scotsman” when it was withdrawn from mainline service over 40 years ago. Today Mr Pegler is President of the Ffestiniog Railway, and has been awarded an OBE for services to railway heritage.

Also awarded the OBE is Andrew Scott, the Head of the National Railway Museum in York, and Chris Austin — previously Executive Director, Community Rail Development, at the former Strategic Rail Authority, and Chair of the West Somerset Railway Company.

Mrs Gillian Barratt, Railway Inspectorate Contacts Officer, at H.M. Railway Inspectorate, is awarded an MBE.
