SOUTHEASTERN will use a device to weigh its passengers in a bid to cut overcrowding.

The rail firm will record the overall weight of its Electrostar trains to calculate how many passengers are on board by using pressure operated underfloor scales.

This information will be used to work out which trains need more seats or if new services need to be introduced.

The scales are currently fitted to all 608 mainline Class 375 and 376 Electrostars.

The unladen weight of a typical Class 375 train is 170 tonnes and as passengers board the train en route, this weight is increased.

Southeastern uses an industry-approved standard of 75kgs as the average weight of a person.
