What follows may not make sense to some of you, but will be understood
by anyone interested in Amateur Radio.

Snipped from RSGB (Radio Society of Great Britain) news...

I doubt the L&B will be able to take part this year, but hope we can put something in place for 2010.

Are any other railways represented on this group taking part?
Did anyone get involved last year?

Are there any other links between any heritage railways and amateur radio groups?

Every year for one weekend Scout Groups across the world join in JOTA, Jamboree on the Air and this event sounds similar.

Scout Groups wishing to take part usually recruit known local radio hams prior to the event. Scouts get to speak to other Scouts across the world whilst the radio hams pick up some new contacts.

Registrering in advance is essential so that you can be given a call sign, no "Hey good buddy, this is Bluebell Terrier here, 10 - 4"

"Bluebell Terrier"? that tells us something of your particular railway interests!

There are similar contests, such as Islands on the Air (IOTA)and Lighthouses on the Air (LOTA). The rules vary from contest to contest, but normally inviolve making contact with as many different stations (radio amateurs) from as many different places around the world as possible in a given time (typically 24 or 48 hours). Each competitor's (there may be different classes of competitor - individual, group, low-power, by particular waveband, morse-code, mobile, etc) results are sent in and collated, and the winners announced by the organising club/group, but being an international event requires a fair amount of co-ordination and organisation. Some contests can involve thousands of entrants from all around the world.

With an interest in both (obviously), I'd like to see more joint Amateur Radio and Heritage Railway events - that would be heaven!
