I'm really into photography and would quite like a job involving it however i do NOT want to take pictures of people (weddings and stuff), i like taking arty/creative pictures. I also love writing and I have been thinking of writing for a teenage magazine and hopefully being able to get photography in there as well.

A difficult one, jobs like that are very hard to come by, thats why I keep it as a hobby. Probably best off talking to connections etc.

I'll add, even though I don't persue the money I make about £30-£50 a year through high res image sales

Perhaps try the talk photography forum rather than this rail based one.....

Hang on to that that goal but recognise that it may take you a while to get there, if you get there at all. Don't let it detract from the main event, which is to find a career that will keep a roof over your head and food on the table.

Meanwhile, with regard to your goal, concentrte on two things: learning your tools and getting yourself known. Taking the second point first , study the specialist magazines (railways as you've chosen to post here), understand their terms and conditions and understand the material that they are looking for. Then begin submitting material, but don't commit to lengthy works without running the idea past the editorial team first.

As far as tools are concerned, polish up on Photoshop skills, at home or at college, and familiarise yourself with whatever publishing packages you can get your hands on. Also polish up your writing and learn how to adapt to different styles. Then perhaps you can approach preservation groups and specialist interest groups with an offer to help with their society or club magazine. I did this for a while and what an eye-opener it was in terms of how badly organised some of these publications are. You can see some of my work and thoughts on the subject at the following link (not rail related):

And of course, use tools like fotopic (or better still build your own website) to promote your work. To make that final leap, research and approach potential employers and clients with a proven track record and solid portfolio of material behind you. Best of luck.

Might be worth talking to someone like the HR manager at Future Publishing (or another magazine publishing house - Future springs to mind as I know people that work there!) to see if they would spare you time to get some advice - often although these people are very busy, if you are polite (and butter them up a bit) they may be willing to help point you in the right direction.
