Roller Rink Planned For Victorian King’s Cross Goods Shed

The team leading the redevelopment around King’s Cross have submitted plans to build a roller rink inside one of the station’s Victorian goods sheds.

After arriving in the capital by train, fish, potatoes and other perishable goods would be stored beneath the West Handside Canopy before being distributed across London.

Argent has now submitted proposals to Camden Council for a 28 metre-long free-standing roller rink within the historic building as part of the massive redevelopment works around King’s Cross.

David Partridge, director of Argent (King’s Cross) Ltd, said: “One of the most rewarding things about being involved in the transformation of King’s Cross is seeing other people discover the area. This concept will ultimately help to bring the development to life for a whole new audience.”

Tarek Merlin, of architects Feix & Merlin, said: “Through the use of raw, industrial materials but with a colourful twist, we have tried to create an installation that echoes the history and fabric of the existing canopy structure, while unifying the space and creating a new landmark and an attraction.

“The intention is that the design helps the West Handyside Canopy to become a new cultural and social space at the heart of King’s Cross.”

Last time I was here, it was a drinking hole to young Aussies to get wasted on cheap booze, have a ritual hazing with a Dentists chair, a floor covered in straw and all before 10am on a Sunday morning.

Anything has to be an improvement on that.
