    An amazing story from the Schwarzwaldbahn where a track maintenance locomotive ran away, on fire, for 28kms without a driver on board:

    It's in German but the video is quite striking!
    How come the driver bailed out, without applying the brakes?

    Probably tried to apply the brakes, they failed and then decided that jumping out was the best option for staying alive.

    From a DB driver I know: The runaway driver jumped off, was found along the line, but won't talk about it.
