The new Obluchensky tunnel in the far east of Russia is on course to open in October after contractor SK MOST announced the completion of track work along the 860-metre line.

New images released by SK MOST show the progress being made on the project, which once complete will see traffic on the Far East Railway Line move from the old to the new tunnel.

Tunnelling works began in September 2011, using a combination of drilling and blasting.

The new Obluchensky tunnel will replace the current tunnel, which was built in 1915.

Now the the track has been laid, SK MOST has said that attention will turn to installing the new line’s S&T systems.
