Russian Railways has forged a partnership with Serbia to help reconstruct the country’s railway network.

The Russian government is helping fund the construction and modernisation of rail infrastructure in Serbia after granting an $800 million state export credit.

Works include the construction and electrification of a second track on the Belgrade – Pančevo line, reconstruction of six sections – totalling 112 km – of Pan-European Corridor X, which connections Austria and Greece, and delivering 26 new diesel trains.

The contract was signed between Sergei Pavlov, managing director of Russian Railways International, and Dragoljub Simonović, managing director of Serbian Railways, in Belgrade on May 23.

Announcing the new partnership, Vladimir Yakunin said: “Strengthening bilateral and mutually beneficial cooperation with the railways of Serbia as part of the overall revitalization of economic cooperation between Russia and Serbia, with a state export credit provided by the Russian Federation, is a priority for us, not only at the moment, but also over the long term.”
