What is the plan with 4920 "Dumbleton Hall"? will she ever return to steam?

    4920 Dumbleton Hall

As I understand it the next engine out from the SDR workshops is 3205 in early/mid 2010. After that work moves on to 6412 and then 1420. So there is a plan but after that when 5786 reaches the end of its ticket or is withdrawn prior that it might take precedence on the basis that it could be a quick turnaround. On the other hand to have three panniers in service at once, albeit different types (1369, 6412 & 5786) might not be the best idea.
3803 remains the flagship SDR engine and I don't think there is any chance of having 3803 and 4920 in service at the same time. When 3803 is no longer available a decision on progressing Dumbleton or 3803 will need to be made and indeed whether either should be progressed.
By way of background it seems to be SDR policy to have 3 engines available for most of the season with 4 during the peak two train running period.

Is 3205 going to be permanently, or at least long term (nothing is ever permanent in preservation as far as locos are concerned), based on the SDR? I don't know who owns or controls this lovely relic of the country railway. Even better in BR black, but I don't want to start yet another livery argument!

The WLS are keen to have a quick turnaround on 5786 to earn money for the restoration of the Kitson (Caernarvon..?), with which work seems to be gathering pace.

The amount of work required to 6412, given also other contract work coming in and out of BFL means that 1369 will be close to being, if not, out of ticket by the time 6412 is outshopped.

Contract work prevented 3803 being in service for the Half-Price weekend last week... ...

    Thanks,

    Dom

With the overhaul costs for any loco usually starting around £100k and often averaging £250k I think you will find cash flow dictates the speed of work and priority. Ideally the SDR wants 4 locos available at all times but given the willingness to help out others is prepared to put something out on hire when it can be spared. Hence 1369 going to Chinnor for Christmas and next year and 3803 being offered for long term hire when 3205 is available. Contract work does not take precedence over essential home fleet maintenance, 3803 is in for some complex repairs and it was more important for it to be ready for the Santa service than half price w/e. This years Santas will be 8 coach trains top and tailed.

3205 will be based at the SDR for quite a few years to come and 4920 is on the radar but it does rather depend on money.......
