A major engineering project being carried out on the Severn Valley Railway during early 2012 involves renewal of drainage and track through and in the vicinity of thetunnel between Bewdley and Kidderminster. The work being carried out will see the provision of new rail, sleepers and ballast together with the installation of a new drainage system along both sides of the track throughout the tunnel and for some distance in the Bewdley direction. In addition some minor work will be carried out on the tunnel lining and both tunnel portals. The tunnel, originally constructed in 1876, was subsequently brick lined by the GWR in 1910, fortunately the majority of tunnel structure and lining remains in good condition. The work begins on January 3rd 2012 following the conclusion of the Festive Season trains and the railway is scheduled to re-open to passenger trains on Saturday 11th February.
Some preparatory work has already been carried out on site as the picture here shows.
