Siemens to supply 74 Inspiro metros to Riyadh

Siemens is to build 74 Inspiro trains for Riyadh’s new metro system – the biggest project of its kind in the world.

As well as supplying rolling stock, Siemens will deliver the electrification and signalling system as part of the BACS consortium, which is building two of the six planned driverless metro lines for the city.

The Riyadh Metro is the most ambitious urban rail project in the world, with around 175 kilometres of new track and 85 new stations expected to be built in the next few years.

Siemens, whose portion of the contract is worth around $2.1 billion, has today (October 10) unveiled more details about exactly what part it will play in building the new desert metro.

The new Inspiro vehicles, which will be built in two and four-car configurations, will feature higher-capacity air conditioning systems than usual to cope with the extreme heat, which can push 45 degrees celsius at the height of summer.

The bogies, traction drive, brakes and doors will also all be fitted with special seals and filters to keep sand out.
