Singapore publishes new rail masterplan

Seventy-five per cent of trips around Singapore will be made on public transport by 2030, according to the Land Transport Authority.

The target was outlined in the Singapore Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) updated transport masterplan, which was published last week.

The new detailed plan builds on ambitions first announced by the LTA in 2008.

By 2030, Singapore hopes to double the size of its urban rail network to 360 kilometres, putting eight in 10 homes within a 10-minute walk of a train station.

Several major projects are already underway and due for completion by 2030.

Once complete, the Downtown line will become the longest automated mass transit line in Singapore

The LTA is also overseeing the construction of the Tuas West Extension and Thomson Line (TSL) – a 30km underground train line that is expected to be fully completed in 2021.
