Singapore reveals fleet expansion plans

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has unveiled plans to introduce more than 80 new trains onto its rail network over the next few years.

From 2014, 41 new trains will be added to the North-South East-West Lines’ (NSEWL), 18 to the North East Line (NEL) and 24 to the Circle Line (CCL), increasing capacity on the lines by 30, 70 and 60 per cent respectively.

Further capacity will be created by a signalling upgrade on the North-South East-West Lines’ (NSEWL).

LTA said it also plans to buy more light rail vehicles, with an additional 13 carriages to be procured for the Bukit Panjang LRT system.

Sixteen single car trains on the Sengkang-Punggol LRT (SPLRT) system will be modified to allow two-car operation and a further 16 vehicles will be procured, increasing capacity by 40 per cent.
