And now the team can now return to the pressure of restoring some of SVR's own engines.

34053 'Sir Keith Park' caused a panic at the SVR today when the loco slipped at Highley. To be fair it was the first train of the day to Bridgnorth, was hauling eight blood and custard coaches and was running tender first. I was told that the train had to set back before a second attempt was made at the incline. The train was 50 mins late arriving back at Kidderminster. <BJ>

Same happened a couple of months ago though I think SKP's train was only 7 (not much 8 coach running this year compared to other years)

Set back? I hope that wasn't propelling a passenger train?

What panic. SKP slipped to a stand. Operational procedures were followed in a methodical manner. There were no risk to passengers and setting back in section is alowed as SKP was the only train in section as per single line token working. I was on the freight working which did run late but so what. We had a 50 fail once and was 70 late. We didnt panic just applied operational procedures.

Stuff happens, life goes on; its what railway work is all about. Its how you deal with it that is the important part.

The bank out of Highley can be absolute stinker, especially at this time of year. I would be curious to know if it is any steeper than its supposedly 1 in 100 (I read that when renewing the track at Goathland they found a few sections of 1 in 18 I think!). Pacifics and even the standard 4 tanks have come to grief regularly there. The combination of near standing start from Highley, reverse bends and leaf fall give a challenge for any crew, especially if their loco has large driving wheels..

Ive been on two trips where a trains come to grief there, 7819 on a railtour in December, and a regular trip behind 4566..
Both occasions had to await the rescue.

Same thing happened to me once with the Class 5 TF on the MHR. First train up from Alton, in the cutting in leaf fall season. The driver/supervisor was relaxed about it as we just slipped rather than stalled. Interesting that it was the speedo that gave me the instant clue before I heard the loco note change. Only a split second difference but a useful indicator.

Not the best time of year for many a class of locomotive. Anyway, I've had 'Greyhound' (Warship, not the T9 beauty) fail on me at Bewdley, and that really did cause a panic from my perspective, as it occurred within 45 minutes of my last connecting train home. Thankfully, 46446 was put on the train, and I had my one and only trip behind it. Got to Kidder within 15 minutes.

Exact same thing happened this time last year with 925, same place, 8 IIRC, had to go all the way back to Highley and have another go!

46446? Was that 46443 carrying another identity as I'm sure the "real" 46446 was cut up in around 1968?

I think you're right. I knew it was 4644-something, and spotted some recent photos showing the loco as 46446.

I've seen the same/similar photos and that set me Googling as recall just 46443 and 46521 being operational on the SVR. I'm sure it was 46443 masquerading as '46. Perhaps an SVR aficionado could confirm or deny this.

I recall 46443 was renumbered for a Cambrian Railways themed gala on the SVR a few years ago and although I can't recall the exact number I don't think it was one of the 465xx that were common on the old CR system, I may be wrong though?
