This is a very complex subject and one for which there is no one size fits all solution.

Basically the best deals are on an escalator that starts to go downwards if your new system is not commissioned by the 31st March 2012 and the best rates are restricted to systems of below 50Kw following a Government review implemented in July 2011.

There are two types of deal

One - buy a system - get Feed In Tariff index linked to RPI for 25 years, paid for everything you generate, used or exported; don't pay for use of your own generated power - and get paid for what you export. You buy, own and are responsible for the kit - but the returns are far better

Rent out space for a.n. other to put a system on your property and they get the FIT and any exported sale price - you get the "free electricity" element.

There are three basic sweet spots in installation size

4Kw - a typical house roof load - no planning required - no communication with the local Electricity Distribution Co needed - easy peasy

10kw - for larger roofs, barns, warehouses etc - the largest size you can fit without needing DNO (distributor) approval

50Kw - the largest size of system now viable after the July 2011 review. Needs 350 sq metres of panels but the return can equate to up to £20k per annum for an outlay not much in excess of £125k. Needs full planning consent and DNO approval

Remember - these deals are being scaled back by Government and the returns start to decline from April next year - so if you are interested - start making enquiries right now.

    BUT

Beware - this industry is full of fill your boots klondykers who simply want to cut and run. Make sure any installer you use is reputable and has a good track record. It has taken me two months to find two firms that I am prepared to consider doing business with - and discounted many more get rich quick cold callers and referrals who must have some kind of software that indicates people searching for solar information on the net.

Be quick - be careful - and be better off afterwards!

The best one I know of is the following.
this requires NO capital to be spent by the railway.

An investor buys the panels for your roof, they maintain them for free, (It's in their interest)
They get paid the Feed in Tariff and your railway gets the free electricity.

Please feel free to contact myself for any information.
We only use MCS accredited installers who are insured.

One railway has gone for this, and they will be able to boast Green Credentials! And whilst saving 10k plus in electric bills.
