Ex-LNWR engines carrying a different smokebox number to that shown on the tender was far from uncommon. The Midland Railway coupled engines and tenders together on a more or less permanent basis, and painted the engine number on the tender sides. This practice was then applied across the entire LMS system from 1923.

The LNWR, on the other hand, realised that tenders spent less time out of traffic for repairs than locos did, and economised by building fewer tenders. So a loco going into works would be uncoupled from its tender, this tender then going to another loco. When the first engine re-entered traffic, it would be coupled to next tender available, which itself would have come from another engine, and possibly still carried its number. This situation continued until the LMS finally decided to move the number to the cab sides, and put its initials on the tender instead.

Similar things happened later when black tenders would be attached to red engines and vice-versa.
