Spain looks to build coastal rail link between Valencia and Alicante

The Spanish government is to look into of building a new coastal rail link between Valencia and Alicante.

The Ministry of Public Works has opened the bidding for a 1.1 million euro contract to conduct a feasability study into the proposed route.

Although a new line would need to be constructed between Alicante and Gandia, some sections of the new route would only require upgrades to the existing infrastructure.

The study will also consider options for a 48 kilometre branch line from Alicante to Torrevieja, where there is currently no rail connection.

Before the project can be given the go ahead, the feasability study must first establish whether there is adequate demand for the route and what the potential profitability of the new line could be.

The proposed route would look to link up coastal towns between the two cities, which would include the seaside resort of Benidorm.
