As February dawns, the preserved lines awaken.

In the South West, half term week heralds a new season, even if some go back to their slumbers afterwards at least as far as the public is concerned. The Bodmin and Wenford Railway will be running steam services from 17th to 22nd inclusive, and the South Devon Railway is running a branch line gala from 16th to 24th inclusive with the steam railmotor and the 1369 pannier tank (of Wenford Bridge fame) at weekends and auto trains using 1450 and 5542 on all days during the gala. Not to be outdone, the West Somerset starts up on 9th February (not every day afterwards) and the Paignton and Kingswear line is now starting its season with steam on 16th February and runs to the end of that month (not 25th) and beyond although not every day in March.

Fans of the narrow gauge down here should head for the Lynton and Barnstaple at Woody Bay -starting on 17th February, but I have not been able to get onto the Launceston Steam Railway website; may have to wait till Easter.

So why not dispel those winter blues!
