Just scrolling down the UK Steaminfo site, and the above tour caught my beady little eye. Although provisional at the moment, it's double-headed by 45231 and 61994 'The Great Marquess' to Fort William via Falkirk and Helensburgh. It is intended to be diesel-hauled on the return, so its probably a loco positioning move for the Jacobite. Its priced at £79 (good value for the mileage and nature of the route), and will presumably have first preference for SRPS members prior to open tender to the wider enthusiast fraternity. I'm seriously considering doing it if it turns out to be a runner...

Have now booked this tour, it'll be the first time I've used the SRPS, but if this goes according to plan (notwithstanding the usual caveats), then I'll probably do a few more tours with them in future to build up my Scottish steam mileage (which is currently consists of the Jacobite and a line from Carlisle to Stirling via Coatbridge). Now to fund an open return from Swansea to Edinburgh (£99 with Railcard) and the hotel in Edinburgh. Worst luck there'll probably be engineering work between Edinburgh and Polmont that weekend...

I'm sure that you'll find SRPS tours fully to your satisfaction. I went with them last June, using 61994 over the Highland Main Line to Aviemore and then up the Strathspey Railway where the Caley 0-6-0 no. 828 was available. I recommend booking their meals on the train - very good value for money.

I'd gladly go on this trip but for a previous commitment that day.

Excellent. Cheers for the review, as it always helps to know that a company is well regarded.
