Community rail lines have experienced mixed fortunes since the launch of the government's Community Rail Development Strategy in November 2004, according to a progress report by the Department for Transport.

The DfT says all seven lines designated as 'pilots' have recorded revenue growth, but there are marked differences between the routes. It cautions that dates of public holidays and engineering closures may mask long-term trends.
