    I have added the 1st of 2 collections featuring Stanier 8F’s the first are pre 1968 photos

    You have an interesting 8F on your Castles page Nos. 81/82 on Llanelli shed.

    This engine 48309 which together with 48707 pulled the Royal Train from Neyland to Aberystwyth 7/8/1955 and back to Carmarthen the next day, they were also the only 8F's fitted with steam heat'
    This must have been a great sight and sound climbing out of Aberystwyth and on up Trawscoed bank with nearly 500 tons on the drawbar.

    Wasn't some of the Bath Green Park 8F's fitted with Steam heat in the 1960's?

    Those would be LLanelli engines that were transferred out on the closure of the Central Wales route to through freight in 1964.

    As Big Dave says, they were the ex-Royal engines already fitted with CWA. No others with fitted with it to work over the S&D.

    While much is made of the fact that 48309 was once fitted with CWA for a royal duty in 1955, does anyone know if it was still fitted when working on the S&D a decade later? If it was, it was almost certainly never used, despite the fact that this loco worked several specials and the occasional passenger train during the last year of the line. It was in fact one of the three active 8Fs at Bath during the last week of service, yet it was 48706 which worked the GWS special on the Sat (5th March) while 48760 was entrusted with the 8.15 am Bath to Templecombe on that bitterly cold and frosty morning - a train that cried out for a steam heated loco had one been available.

    Interesting, this is the same loco that is now totally stripped for spares including the boiler for the County project.

    I didn't realise it lasted until the end of steam in Aug '68.
    Edit. On reflection, if you enlarge the photo it looks like 48618. Can anyone confirm?

    I would surmise that either it was left on but lack of use meant that it was impossible to use or, it had been removed during a later major overhaul and not refitted.
    I would guess probably the latter.

    Alan Wilkinson's book, 'Stanier 8Fs at Work', on Page 109 shows 48707 on Gresford Bank on 1st June 1964. The steam heat bag can be clearly seen below the buffer beam.

    This suggests that the engines retained the CWA to the end, and the fact that the bag was still fitted, even in August when most locos had them removed through the summer, suggests that it was still useable. Certainly it must have survived several repairs since fitting in 1955.
