Station design competition launched in Melbourne

Melbourne is being asked to vote for its favourite design in a competition to decide the future of Flinders Street Station.

State premier Denis Napthine launched the poll yesterday (July 23), dubbed the People’s Choice.

Six designs, produced by architects around the globe, have now gone on show.

Napthine said: “From the very beginning, the Victorian Coalition Government aimed to run a competition that encompassed not just Australian designs, but the best ideas from around the world to restore and reinvigorate the whole 4.7 hectare station precinct.

“All six of these fantastic designs re-imagine Flinders Street as more than just a station; they are visions for a whole new riverside precinct for Melbourne.”

The overall winner of the $1 million competition, which was launched in 2011, will be announced on August 8.

Minister for Major Projects David Hodgett said: “We want people to think about all aspects of the designs – this is more than a beauty contest.

“The public will see the same plans, images, videos and material that have been provided to competition jury so they can make an informed decision for the People’s Choice Award.”
