That fire has been burning since 2011?

Ok just to clarify - the Facebook post I saw on 29th June 2018 (that started the info in this thread about a fire visible from Porthmadog), where the Facebook post was confirmed with different images from secondary posters, showed that there was a fire burning beyond the ridge that is above Boston Lodge - the text with the photos said the fires were in the Llandecwyn/Talsarnau area.

I'm rather surprised that anyone (even on NP) thinks that saying stuff like that in 2018 is anywhere near acceptable. You'll be telling us that the natives revert to speaking Welsh when you walk into pubs next.

With this weather seemingly unabating, I'm now wondering what will happen regarding 'The Talisman'. Although I can dream of a scenario where Tornado gets shoved by Alycidon, I doubt it...!

There's a post on another forum saying the Jacobites today are 37 hauled. Looking see the recent and forecast weather for the Highlands, can't say I'm surprised.

That is a deeply questionable shadow to cast from an admin. Great to see the "nat bashing" that has become the foundation of the Scottish media is now being applied to another Celtic nation in these islands.

    Its not acceptable. At all.

Perhaps one of the other Admins/Moderators might like to do something about this?

As for the weather. The heather up here is approaching tinderbox levels. Even though there was still Snow on Lochnagar at the beginning of June, the hills are dry, so this precaution IMHO is warranted. Jacobite is steam today tho.

I’m not surprised a class 37 was out today on the Jacobite. Considering Motherwell saw temperatures hit 33.2C last week. The hottest ever for Scotland.

Not much changes then. I noticed that back in 1959 when I was in the RAF. ;)

Crikey, I knew that old chestnut would flush out a response.

I recently spent a very pleasant evening in a very crowded hostelry in Caernarfon which, I believe, has one of the highest proportions of first language Welsh speakers in the country. Guess what, they speak Welsh to each other, it's their language. They were however more than happy to chat with me in English. I've noticed, by the way, people speaking their native languages in bars all over the world. Damned rude in my opinion!

Thank you, ill informed comments need to be challenged. Wales bashing seems to be a popular pastime at the moment, right the way to Westminster - but no suprises there. Those however who can overcome their misconceptions will however find a most welcoming and outward looking nation.

When you stop to think the damage any lineside fire can do ,and how quickly it can get out of control I can't see how we can criticize any railway that decides to substitute diesel traction for steam where it has high risk areas that it passes through after all, I don't imagine having your field of crops burnt down will make you exactly well disposed to your steam railway neibours .

I'm beginning to get a bit anxious about our trip in August over the S+C with Tornado, supposed to be my first proper mainline steam experience (I count the Jacobite as a very long, very pretty heritage railway really!) :Nailbiting: I'm not sure what would be worse, a show pony on the front or rescheduling, neither are particularly ideal, the latter especially so as I'll be at the wrong end of the country by the time they rerun it in all liklihood. :(

On the bright side, and I hope I'm not tempting fate, we haven't given in on the GWSR, steam is still going strong, I suspect the heroics of our line-side team keeping our embankments so tidy have contributed to this.

I'd bet the insurance claim for loss of crops and earnings would be very unwelcome too.

I, like many others on here I suspect, well remember the days of farmers burning stubble in the fields after the harvest was over. I also suspect we remember how easily that could get out of control, and the demands that it placed on the local fire service.

I would like to think we haven't got another 1976 lurking here so you'll be okay: where's Denis Howell when you need him? As soon as Sunny Jim appointed him, the heavens opened!

I think that as this was apparently the first thought that popped into the posters head in a thread about steam bans says rather more about the poster themselves and certain ingrained prejudices than they probably wish to reveal..... Taking note of what other posters have been suspended for recently, yet a moderator can make such comments without sanction says rather a lot about the grave new world of Nat Pres.

I hope you're not tempting fate either; we have our 2807 Supporters' Day this coming Sunday and it would be a little disappointing if 2807 couldn't haul the train!
