Does anyone know what ran through Haarlem today? My girlfriend told me that she heard a steam engine passing near the railway line where she lives and that it's a semi-regular occurrence. Where do they come from and what type of engines are they?

A frequent visitor to the Dutch mainline in the 'Randstad' area is the SSN at www.stoomstichting.nl, although there wasn't an excursion scheduled today as far as I know. After their Christmas train to Valkenburg there is now a lull to 4th March.

The SSN runs with German engines based in a depot in Rotterdam North Goods. Currently running are pacific 01 1075 and large tank 65 018. Prairie 23 023 is being overhauled and might run in 2013. If you like haulage behind a 2500HP pacific on the main line, the SSN is your first choice in Holland. There is also an annual several-day excursion to Germany, currently at the planning stage.

Found a picture with both current locos at Haarlem !

The first carriage with the lookout has since been swapped for a German Bm type.
Picture looks a bit small in preview, not sure how to get it bigger, as it started as 1 Mb.

    Hope you like it.

Yes - a fabulous station, with beautiful terracotta tilework.
The picture was taken in 2008 during its 100th birthday celebration. The SSN ran shuttle trains to the seaside at Zandvoort.

The Station in Haarlem is lovely including the high up complete Wooden station masters office?
A station which if you didn't know Neil, Roelof was once the Master of for a time.
