Steam Railway SR487 – On Sale Now!

Discussion in 'Steam Railway' started by Thomas Bright, Dec 7, 2018.

In this month’s edition of Steam Railway, we mark the achievement of an important milestone: the restoration of the 150th ex-Barry locomotive – ‘Modified Hall’ No. 6989 Wightwick Hall.

Toby Jennings looks back at how preservation restored 150 ex-scrapyard steam locomotives since 1968, and asks whether we’ll ever get to 200. Enjoy our survey on the engine’s awaiting their return to steam, and the ones that will never make it.

From the latest restoration, to the first – Keighley-based ‘4F’ No. 43924. Midland 4F Preservation Society member John Atherton details the Fowler 0-6-0’s epic journey from South Wales to Haworth, when it became the first steam locomotive to be rescued from the scrapyard, and the first to return to steam.

It’s not all about Barry however. We also present part three of our ongoing new-build survey – this time analysing the Great Western Projects – while Peter Zabek showcases the very best preservation-era images of pre-Grouping Southern locomotives in BR-era liveries, recalling the twilight days of the Southern Region.

Also, why not vote for what you think should win the coveted Steam Railway Magazine Award at the 2019 Heritage Railway Association Awards in February? To vote for your favourite, click here: https://www.steamrailway.co.uk/hra-vote/. Voting will close on December 21, so get your vote in now.
