I'm wondering if any of you can help me.

I'm trying to learn what workings went on from Stoke Shed prior to closure, with which locos performing which duties particularly on that final day.

Having only been born in '87, I don't know much myself but if anyone can help I'd be most appreciative.

I have looked at the website below, but it doesn't give much information on workings.

    Thanks in Advance

Yep, and missing most of the 8F and Black Fives that were still in service August '67.

I know the last locos left were a combination of Stanier Fives, Stanier Eights, Ivatt Fours & Std 4 4-6-0s, but can't find out any specific numbers for the last day!

Contacted a couple of local enthusiasts I know through CVR, and sent messages to Knotty Study Group. Trying to think where else I can ask.

Got a meeting with a group of former 5D men planned for the end of the month. Would think these guys should be able to help me!

Cheers to everyone else that offered help :)

Lil bear, I've only just spotted this. I have one or two photos taken the day after Stoke shed closed and I'll try and dig them out. One of the 5D firemen, a chap called Jeff Cope , from Biddulph, comes with me once a year on the footplate at the Severn Valley Railway. I have met some of the group he takes touring; they are a great bunch. My favourite firing shovel is a Lucas given to me by a Stoke fireman the day before the shed closed, with the words, "Here y' are, youth. I wunner be needin this again." It's had one or two repairs, like "Trigger's Broom," but it's still the business.

    Regards,

    John

To give those of you interested a little update, courtesy of Allan C. Baker's fabulous book "An Illustrated History of Stoke and North Staffordshire's Railways" I've been able to learn that there was 35 locomotives left in service in August 1967 at 5D

    These locos were -:

    Ivatt 4 2-6-0
    43001 / 43002 / 43007 / 43112

    Stanier 5 4-6-0
    44661 / 44682 / 44805 / 44840 / 44859 / 44876
    45050 / 45052 / 45241 / 45270 / 45292 / 45299 / 45308 / 45405

    Stanier 8 2-8-0
    48061 / 48364 / 48368 / 48375 / 48402 / 48522 / 48729 / 48697 / 48768

    Riddles 4 4-6-0
    75002 / 75006 / 75013 / 75029 / 75046 / 75047 / 75052 / 75071
(75018 has also been reported to have remained in service, though officially was withdrawn in June apparently)

The final steam duty of 5D though appears to have fallen to a guest engine, with 9F 92109 from 6C departing on the Sunday to collect empty Iron Ore wagons from Shepton steelworks to return them to Birkenhead.

I'm still doing some research into this, but if you are interested in the NSR under BR days then Allan's book is really worth the read. Sadly no copies on Amazon at present but keep an eye out if you can :)
