Retail giant Tesco has submitted new plans to Network Rail to build a supermarket above the London Marylebone to Birmingham railway, two years after a tunnel collapse severed the route and caused major disruption to train services.

Construction of the Gerrards Cross store in Buckinghamshire was halted in 2005 after an accident was narrowly avoided when a section of new tunnel caved-in on to the live railway line. At the time contractor Jackson was creating a length of tunnel over the railway using precast concrete arch units in order to build up the ground over the tunnel to form a site for the supermarket.
