Summit held to press forward Australia’s high-speed rail plans

Campaigners travelled to Canberra today (June 26) to highlight the need for greater political support for Australia’s high-speed rail ambitions.

This follows the publication of a report earlier this year suggesting that the proposed high-speed rail network, which would connect Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane, could cost Australia $114 billion.

Businesses from all around the world arrived in Parliament House to attend a forum hosted by the Australasian Railway Association (ARA).

ARA chief executive Bryan Nye said: “The government’s recent study has sparked world-wide interest particularly amongst countries that have long benefited from high-speed rail and see Australia as a new and viable market.

“Countries much less developed than Australia are already investing in high speed travel. We need to take this project forward or we will quickly be left behind.
