Swanage galas usually are. Departures every 40 minutes from Swanage, and every 20 minutes from Norden (there is a Norden - Harmans X shuttle), and if you sit at Corfe for the whole day on the Friday and Saturday you will see in excess of 60 departures. Not many single lines can see that kind of action.

Here is a link to last years timetable and if this years event is similar I will be attending.
Went to last years event and I have never been to a gala like it.
Went they say they are running an intense timetable they certainly mean it. It is definatly not like other railway galas. Galas are supposed to be different from the normal timetable and not a 9-5 gala. Having been to a few galas Swanages tops the list for being intense and value for money.

The only Swanage gala I've ever been to was their 'End of Southern Steam' in 2007 and very good it was too. Swanage galas are normally in competition with others, but I might go to this one.

    Regards

The Swanage Railway has announced that A4 no. 4492 (AKA 60019 Bittern) is the 7th Loco for its September Steam Gala. We are delighted to announce this locomotive which is appearing for the first time at a heritage railway in its new livery. This weekend promisies to be a fantastic event and we look forward to welcoming you!
6 coach trains, shuttles and freights will be operating throughout the weekend with late night running featuring the two visiting locomotives on both friday and saturday nights.

Bit of a Kings Cross theme going on there, with 4492 and 1744!

Not sure 4492 (ex Bittern) was ever based at "Top Shed" but believe 1744 was based 'up-the-road' at Hornsey for a number of years so they would have passed each other on numerous occasions.
Can the last time that happened have been over 50 years ago?

Only if you qualify it with 'in steam'. I'd imagine they passed a fair few times around Loughborough shed in the early 90s! ;-)

I hope I'm wrong, but all mention of Bittern/Dominion of New Zealand has vanished from the Swanage web site as far as I can see. Does this mean (gulp) that it's not going to happen?

It might be one Eastern loco if my reading of the Swanage website is right.

Can anyone tell me if there is a discount if you buy tickets online in advance? I am attending (subject to any late disasters!) and have hotels all booked etc its just I will pay on the day if it is the same price. Thanks in advance.

I rang the Railway a few minutes ago, as I was planning to book accommodation for the Gala today.

The very pleasant Gentleman who answered the telephone apologized for the lack of information, said the Railway never tell the staff this in advance of Locos. visiting the Gala (A whole month in advance!!) He accessed the website, confirmed the A4
was not listed, and said it may have been a mix-up on the website, as the webmaster live miles from the railway, and that he had never heard anything about an A4 visiting the Railway.

So don't assume 4492 will be there - unless someone from the Railway can tell us definitively!

All I can say at this stage is that my understanding is that details are being discussed between the parties. The news story on the website has been removed while these discussions take place. Further information will be available shortly.
