It's the Tanfield Railway's annual Miners Heritage Weekend coming up. We'll be running our legendary coal train as well as a vintage passenger train, around a dozen miners banners will be on display in Marley Hill carriage shed alongside various other mining related displays.

Locomotives for the weekend are likely to be Renishaw Ironworks No. 6, recently returned from Beamish, on the passenger train. Sir Cecil A. Cochrane in light steam on shed... and... TWIZELL on a coal train!

Twizell is rated as 'likely' at the moment but as she is still running in Sir Cecil A. Cochrane will be on hand to take over if neccessary. Coal train will consist of two brake vans and five hoppers, a little shorter than normal as part of the running in.

Will keep everyone posted during the week and post a timetable soon.

Sorry hadn't spotted that one. The vast majority of the posters on that thread are these days flat out on all manor of events, restorations, goings on at Tanfield (me included) so we don't always get onto the forum as much as we'd like.

    Anyway in reply:

Renishaw Ironworks No. 6 now back in traffic at Tanfield, first day Sunday just gone.

Keighley Gasworks No. 2 progressing nicely, rewheeling now fairly imminent, boiler not far off complete too I believe

Coal train will most definitely be a part of the Miners Heritage Weekend timetable, will post it shortly. I've got spreadsheet problems on my machine so might have to ask Mk1hater. First passenger train at 11am is a firm fixture. I'd recommend arriving no later than 9.0 - 9.30am if you want to get some on shed shots, first coal train departure from East Tanfield etc.

Rumours for gala visitors are as yet only that, we wont be revealing what we've got up our sleeves for a little while yet I'm afraid ;-)

Many thanks for the news & updates P&JR - much appreciated.

Looking forward to seeing Twizell in action and longer term it will be like the good old days when No2 and Cochrane were in service......... memories of the 87 gala, No 2, No 21, No 38, Irwell & Cochrane....

Gala 2011 could be two weekends; if No 2, No 49, Renishaw, Cochrane & Twizell are all available, a home fleet gala.

No 32 is under way as well I understand, but a private project?

    Best Regards

Two week galal! Ouch... I think we'll have to recruit a few more to the organising group if we were going to manage that! In fairness though the gala weekend is far from the only enthusiast friendly weekend in the year. The coal train now has at least four outings a year and I think it's fair to say we're looking at how we can do more events which are likely to appeal to railway and heritage enthusiasts, hence Miners Heritage Weekend.

Probably not putting my point across very good here, was trying to say have "two gala weekends" per year, one home fleet and one with visitors.

Look forward to more news on heritage weekend / gala etc when available thanks again P&JR

Excellent visit this afternoon, well done all involved.

Twizell looked the business, can't wait to have a ride behind it.

Added bonus of Cochrane & Renishaw double heading a full round trip as well.

The "sword dancers" and clog dancers were also a great to watch.

    Best Regards
