Tata Steel agree two-year deal with SNCF

Tata Steel and SNCF have signed a two-year deal which will see the manufacturer supply more than 200 tonnes of track for the French rail network.

The order, which will be delivered by Tata Steel’s Hayange mill using steel transported from Scunthorpe in the UK, is an extension of an earlier contract with SNCF.

Tata Steel will produce 108-metre length rails for France’s high-speed rail lines thanks to a €35 million investment in 2011 to allow the manufacturer to supply longer-length rails.


Henrik Adam, Tata Steel’s chief commercial officer, said: “We know that by working with customers we are able to innovate and develop products they want. We made a significant investment in Hayange to be able to produce the 108m long rail required by SNCF.

“Our heat-treatment facility means we are also now able to produce highly wear-resistant rail in lengths up to 108m – a key requirement of most of our European customers.”

The new facility, which was officially opened in October 2013, will produce around 70,000 tonnes of the longer heat treated-rails each year – more than doubling the current annual output of treated rail to 125,000 tonnes.
