Test trains run on Sao Paulo Line 5 extension

The first test train has made its way from São Paulo Metro’s Largo Treze to the first of 11 new stations being built on the city’s Line 5 extension.

Trial runs will be conducted throughout December along the first section of the 11.5-kilometre line ahead of the opening of Adolfo Pinheiro station in January.

Governor Geraldo Alckmin, who was given a tour of the project site, highlighted the significant safety benefits the extension will bring with the installation of automatic platform doors at each of the new stations.

The extended Line 5 – Lilac will connect with São Paulo’s Line 1 – Blue and Line 2 – Green and improve accessibility to some of the city’s main medical centres.

Once complete, the R $7.5 billion extension between Largo Treze and Chácara Klabin, which will utilise a CBTC (Communication Based Train Control Communications) system, will more than double the current 8.5 kilometre route.

New trains will also be introduced onto the line, with the first of a fleet of 26 new vehicles delivered last month.
