TfL announces 24-hour Tube services and station staff cuts

Plans to operate 24-hour Tube services have been overshadowed by confirmation that Transport for London (TfL) will close all of its ticket offices by 2015 at the loss of 750 posts.

The job losses are the result of a new staffing model that is being introduced, TfL say, to better meet the needs of London Underground passengers.

Ticket offices will become ticket halls and station staff will be redistributed to “give the best personal and face-to-face service to customers”.

As well as station staffing TfL announced that from 2015 it would be running a 24-hour service on Fridays and Saturdays on some lines.

The Piccadilly, Victoria, Central and Jubilee lines and part of the Northern line will be the first to benefit under the plans.

Mike Brown, managing director of London Underground, said: “People are at the heart of this vision – our customers and staff.

“My commitment to London is that all Tube stations will continue to be staffed and controlled in future, with more staff visible and available to help customers buy the right ticket, plan their journey and keep them safe and secure.”

A consultation will now be carried out among LU staff and trade unions.
