Definitely not Tangmere and that's been known for a long time. 70000 would be the best guess and the most suitable loco

There are 4 threads I could make this comment on - next Saturday (23rd) - 4 mainline steam trips, this week, none. 3 or 4 every Saturday through to Christmas from now. Sure, all have different start points but at present 1 still needs a loco - and that is assuming no problems with any other locos! Could a little spreading around of trains and dates not have potentially assisted both the market and availability of locos?

Sadly there is nobody looking at pressure points like this as the market is a competitive one. So we get what we get.

Seems like a heck of a long way without a water stop! Has someone found a second water carrier?

Is the 15mins at fleet long enough? It looks tight but with slick work a splash and dash should be possible

Intriguing 15 minute stop at Fleet though. Would normally keep going a couple of miles to Winchfield for a water stop. The station at Fleet is a building site at present but you should still be able to park a tender truck down at the 'country' end. (Sorry didn't see the above reply before posting)

how so? there are 4 working locos to use at southall to cover the south, (70000, 70013, Braunton and a Black 5) and the northern/midlands ones are covered by '09 and perm anything from the tyseley stable.

    Don't see the problem.

Depends if support crews are available? This appears to be more a problem with Locomotive Services Limited locos. The Black 5 is the most likely since it it is usually Tangmere's support crew when it is down South.

The support crew can't wait for Tangers to come back, they were hopeful of a December return when I spoke to them at Victoria last weekend.

Statement of position as reported by UK Steam - and it is usually bang up to date. This particular train has "TBA" for loco. With mainline locos, especially at this time of year, there is no assurance that they are actually currently available (same is true for pretty much any steam loco). Scheduled winter work or unplanned work may be in progress.

The other factor I didn't mention but which may actually be more of a constraint is coaching stock. Rivera for the DBS trip, a Southall set for this one, VT's own for the Elge and presumably a Carnforth set for Tynesider but again, that is all stock that needs to have heating and lighting working and which is in use so can't be on winter maintenance.

My point was merely to note that this weekend devoid of mainline steam action and next weekend - and the net few weeks - are not. Sure, as we get nearer Christmas, we have Christmas Fairs and other occasions which set the date but I would have said next weekend is actually a bit soon for Christmas trains and not really much more seasonal than this weekend!

Clearly the sales and marketing and business models of the Steam TOC's suggest otherwise.

Her return has been delayed due to parts unknown being manufactured also a number of other "minor" repairs have been attended to at the same time.

Or, given RTC's comment on loading for the Tynesider, perhaps not.......

In fact, one thing you do have to say is that the 4 trains have a reasonable spread of starting points and probably rather better than some dates (4 London/South East starts on 7th December, for example).

I suppose it depends on whether people are booking these for the "Christmas" factor or whether they're booking for the "steam" factor? I would imagine if you're in Weymouth this is just about the only trip of the year which starts from your neck of the woods (plenty come to you but not many the other way) so there's a novelty factor in that.

Are you sure about that? My understanding was that Steam Dreams still have the SRPS set on hire until the end of this year.
