Looks like a much longer journey to Minehead compared with the return. Despite an 8 am start we don't see the Bristol Channel until seven hours later. The journey back takes less than five. I wonder where Clan Line is taking us?

The return is hauled by a Class 67 diesel with a max speed of 100 mph and no need for water stops, so it’s not really that surprising that the return is much quicker.

Clocked that point. However if you just look at the times we have been given to and from Bishops Lydeard. It is 4 hours 35 min going out and a little over 3 hours coming back. Quite a difference.

Not coming back? Billy Butlin wants a steam train exhibit again?

Silly, silly. :D It's a positioning move to get Clan Line nearer to Bristol for its West Country charters and also to give the good people of Somerset sight of what a proper express passenger steam locomotive can look like. All copper will be buffed accordingly.

Clan Line is too big for the turntable at Minehead so can't be turned there for the return journey. Tender first from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard and then the box takes over.

Paddington to Minehead with a Merchant Navy in 2018. Now there is something nobody would have placed a bet on in 1968, say. :)

Indeed. And with Crossrail coming fully on line in December, it will probably be the last year of steam out of Paddington - so make the most of it!

I see that the Berks and Hants will have more traffic than normal on Saturday with diversions that way because of closure of the GWML. Hope that everything slots in as it should.

As long as Clan Line is on time the charter should slot in quite nicely. As an example other westbound trains passing Newbury at the time are:

    09:43 Padd - Swansea
    09:48 Padd - Penzance
    10:11 Padd - Bristol TM
    10:14 Steam charter
10:19 Wembley - Bishops Lydeard light engine
    10:21 Padd - Bedwyn
    10:43 Padd - Swansea
    10:48 Padd - Penzance

If the Padd - Bedwyn stopper is allowed out before Clan Line then the situation will not be so good. <BJ>
