Anyone else booked on this one? Number 9 is rostered Newcastle-Kings Cross & back to York, per RTC's planning. We had a spirited run from York to the Cross with Number 9 last year; it was a real shame about Gresley not being fit for the Newcastle-York section :(

Email in from RTC this morning - £15/person off for any new bookings made before the 15th, in all classes. I'm surprised that premier dining at least isn't already full.

But will 60009 actually work the return or will it be left in London with 47xxx on the return?

Would book if had faith in the RTC brochure!

That has only happended once ( the second time they ran it) when Bittern hauled the return because it was due to haul a trip to Lincoln from the North East a week later.

This is the big question - I see it was still being shown as such the other day. Certainly last year was a big disappointment to be told that we wouldn't be getting Number 9 back out of the Cross...

Well the advertised departure time of 1820 off kings cross with 2120 arrival at York doesn't bode well of it being steam hauled out of the cross.

Easy. Phone them up and ask the question. If they know they will tell you. Their times certainly say not.

It's probably wise to remind yourself of what happened last year.

The outline timings on the RTC site look remarkably like what happened then. Newcastle to London and back to York in a day with steam is just not possible, in my view, unless it's Tornado when there would be less water stops.. So it does look like diesel back to me - not, that is, unless you have a different locomotive in each direction, two hours in London and a silly o'clock arrival back in Newcastle.

I remember it well - my wife & I were on it, & IIRC we were only told of the change once on board. I did think the timings on the RTC site looked similar, but given the advertising this year again emphasising steam back, well, you know how it goes...

We will see what happens, and will see what is said 'on the day', but it does smack of sharp practice...

Now on the RTC web site -
"Our train returns from King’s Cross just after 18:00 and will be diesel hauled stopping at the same stations as on the outward journey to set down passengers."

I wonder which is more frustrating for passengers. An A4 averaging 35mph, or the diesel on the return averaging barely over 50mph!!!

I would think the stagger home. Especially with the late arrival back in Newcastle many will have to take there car and not as expected with the times advertised as arriving home at 2250 and being able to use public transport.

All the fun of the fair..

30 mins at Ferryhill south junction, 3o minutes in Connington loop and oh boy how we love 40 minutes in Doncaster royal mail terminal :)

Could have done with a Deltic for the return.. that would have cleared a few more seats and saved a few minutes.
